Intelligent Design – Does God Exist w/ Perry Marshall

by Michelle Vandepas on February 17, 2010

Does God Exist?

What about Adam and Eve? Intelligent Design?

Perry Marshall says he can prove it all!

Perry Marshall (Yes! the Perry Marshall from Google Adwords – who knew?!) returns for another conversation about God, Intelligent Design, Adam and Eve and how it all started.

More from Perry:

Perry Marshall declares on his site Cosmic Fingerprints, that he can prove the existence of God. Perry has thoughts about Intelligent Design and the Big Bang theory. This video conversation took some interesting twists and turns about theology, new age thought and the possibility of alien beings. We even got around to purpose. I hope that Perry will come back as I have a set of follow up questions to ask. Please leave comments for Perry below.

Perry Marshall is the best-selling author and most quoted authority in the world on the subject of Google advertising. He has helped over 100,000 advertisers save literally billions of dollars in AdWords “stupidity tax.”

His Chicago company, Perry S. Marshall & Associates, consults both online and brick-and-mortar companies on generating sales leads, web traffic, and maximizing advertising results.

Prior to his consulting career, he helped grow a tech company from $200,000 to $4 million sales in four years, and the firm was sold to a public company for $18 million.

Like direct marketing pioneer Claude Hopkins, Perry has both an engineering degree and a love for persuasive copywriting. He’s published hundreds of articles on sales, marketing and technology, and his works include The Ultimate Guide to Google AdWords (Entrepreneur Press, 2006; 2nd Edition 2010), Guerilla Marketing for Hi-Tech Sales People, and Industrial Ethernet (ISA, 2nd Edition).

Michelle, you have brought us to the edge again with this mind blowing interview with Perry Marshall.

Everyone should view your first interview to at least prepare for the extension here.

You cannot skim this one – so get a cup of coffee (or a martini) and carve out some time.

Is is physics, spirituality, religion? – Each person would have to decide for themselves.

As many questions as you so intelligently asked, there are more to delve into with this brilliant and charismatic man.

I suggest you bring him back on a regular basis.

I want to know more. Like is prayer helpful? Is there such a thing as remote healing? Are we all sparks of the Divinity?

He alludes to the possibility of our DNA originating with aliens at some far distant past. Why did they come? And more important – there seems to be less and less news of sightings, abductions – why do they seem to have left?

With all the drivel out there, it is a pleasure to have to think.

Corinne,

I agree – I had a list of questions, again, that I never got to! I still want to ask Perry if his theory works with or against evolution, and how it all fits with consciousness…. Next time, next time.. right Perry?

Michelle,

I am amazed that people need to figure everything out instead of just having faith when it comes to spirital matters. I really don’t need proof that God exist. I can feel him.

Question: “where did God come from.” With the help I have received in my life from God It really isn’t my problem where God came from. All that is important to me is that I know in my heart and mind that he is real and walks with me.

I feel that it is very sad for people that don’t beleive in him, because life has to be very hard for them.

You can not aproach God with science. That is what is so wonderful about him. It is this one thing (God) that we have to go on faith alone.

Debbie – Perhaps that was what Perry was referring to when he said we can feel God everywhere – in the snow, the trees, the beauty….

Hi Michelle,

This is the most thought provoking interview on this topic I have seen on the internet.

Here in the mountains in Bulgaria, local people have belief in the energy of the mountains and that God and His beauty can be found all around.

I didn’t think I would make it though the whole of the interview, but I recommend others to keep going. Amazingly thought proving. Thank You

I didn’t know you were in Bulgaria. I hear the mountains are gorgeous there!… Thanks for stopping and taking the time to comment.

I’ve listened to it and had to break away from my pc/work for 30 minutes or so – just to slow-down and collect my thougths.

It certainly has impact.

My sister and brother-in-law run their own church so I will be sharing with them as well.

The gap between knowledge and ignorance is much less than the gap between knowledge and action.
Action is key. I don’t care about your theology, I care about how that influences your life and what actions it causes you to take.
If you believe you are “right” because science, philosophy, math and gravity are all evidence then your arguments will eventually result in some form of conflict.
What I want to know about god is how does he/she/it recommend we resolve conflicts between all men!
That said, I am impressed with the discussion and the technology and appearance of this site.

Reply

Michelle Vandepas

Bruce – I think God HAS told us how to resolve conflict – but we are always in disagreement on how to interpret His word – which creates more conflict. Huh.

I love hand of God stories – like “the kid bounced off the car.” I’ve seen things like this happen. My mind tries to wrap around it and then reconfigures what I’ve seen to match my experience of reality asking how could that possibly have happened?

I had an experience like this around the holidays. A boy pushing a grocery cart narrowly escaped a pick-up truck traveling 30mph – how? I jerked to attention and honked my horn to wake him up (he was merrily singing and stepping off the curb without looking both ways). The driver saw my reaction and stopped after passing in front of (through) the boy. How did the boy end up on the other side of the truck still merrily singing and not even noticing that he had just missed death? I looked over at the driver, who was visibly shaken, in total amazement. We exchanged a look of profound relief.

God is here. The world is changing.

I love your format! Well done, Michelle

Whew! what a close call. I’ve had things like that happen as well. It’s weird when it happens as as I’m not sure what just happened… was it real? Did I imagine it?… Thanks for coming over. I hope you come again and view some of the other videos!

I normally enjoy listening to Perry but I decided life is to short after about 8 minutes. I have no problem if people want to believe in a God, but science has proven beyond any doubt that our world evolved and wasn’t created by any deity. And that includes us. Rather than look into other explanations or delve into what is never going to be provable, I prefer to enjoy the magnificent world that has evolved around us.

I was intriqued to this interview because it had Perry in it (I didn’t expect to see/hear things this “deep” from Mr.AdWords himself)… I wasn’t that interested on the topic, so I figured I take a look and then go – but I ended up listening to the whole interview…

So first of all, I give you the highest respect for making such a great interview. You asked the right questions at the right time.

The start of the video was most interesting for me… What if there was no uncaused cause, the “creation” – Did it ever start at all? If we go far enough, is there… nothing? Or do we run into what is the true “infinity” (it never started, it just was). Or does it all go to the beginning when it ends, bending time and space and all that…

So yeah… these things are the kind that make your head explode. This is why I prefer enjoying the moment and be happy with where we are now :)

Reply

Michelle Vandepas

Mind boggling to think of no beginning.. where and how did it start – before the big bang?

Hi Michelle,

I enjoyed this quite a bit!

I do tend to agree with Debbie, though. I don’t need science to prove the existence of God or gravity to me. I have experienced both!

And if we are thinking wisely, theory always serves experience, not the other way around.

I never really got concerned with the ‘scientific’ proof of God… because attempting to prove divinity with science reduces divinity to the level of science… which does neither science nor spirit any good.

Any science that can exist in this universe can only be an expression of creation… of the manifestation of God. I believe this includes evolutionary theory as well!

But if science can help people come to a place of faith… then I’m all for the study of that which strongly implies divinity.

keep smiling,

Ben

Benjamin, its the discussion that I love, not the proof. What if there are other universes, what if there are aliens, what if, what if.. that’s the part that intrigues me!

Hi Michelle and Perry :0) Very hot topic! I love deep discussions, very refreshing. I have a hard time with my internet connection to get longer videos but it was worth the time to hear when Bessy finally loaded it for me :0)

I don’t agree with some of Perry’s theory but I did enjoy listening and I do agree with much of what he said. I longed to feel God when I was younger, after I learned and practiced Reiki I found it very easy to feel God in my breath and all around and inside of me at any time. And I realized that God had been in and all around me all along.

I’ve had such a thing going with tackling self discipline lately that when I was listening to the Adam and Eve/Apple story I thought of it as a lesson in what happens when you are not self disciplined and go against what you know you should – you feel shame.

I once heard a theory that God is our conscience, very simple theory but powerful if you explore it although I do think God is much more than that as well.

Funny, Perry reminds me of an older, dark haired version of my nephew, he is in University as an engineer right now. I’ll have to ask him about his theory :0)

Lots of thought provoking and interesting stuff here, thank you for having the courage to explore and share. Can’t wait to explore more of your videos.

Michelle Vandepas

Hi Jan,

I’m a Reiki master, although I haven’t practiced in years… I always felt when I was accessing the Reiki that is was a healing energy – accessible everywhere and by anyone – but I didn’t feel it was God… per se… for me it was almost as if there was a difference in the quality of energy – but that is my perception.

Interesting to see Perry in this light.

I can’t help but feel funny anytime a human claims to be able to prove the existence of God, and therefore the meaning of life. There does seem to be ego involved in such a conversation, though I believe what makes many “believe” is the feeling they have. They “feel” there is a higher being and that can be enough for many.

I don’t want to get too philosophical here for fear of hurting my brain, but when Perry discussed the idea that DNA was proof that God existed, I couldn’t help but be reminded of an argument my dad has often discussed. The very existence of DNA or paper or plants, etc. is a man-made concept. Without man, the concept of DNA would not exist. If one believes this, then Perry has taken a man-made concept and used it as proof that a higher being exists.

I know that religion and the belief in a God has helped many people live beautiful and happy lives. They can be positive influences.

Michelle Vandepas

My brain already hurts Keller. After 2 interview with Perry and over 100 with other spiritual topics I’m starting to believe there are no answers for sure!

Hi Michelle,

Wow, that’s quite an interview. As a Christian myself it’s refreshing to hear these questions discussed and to see respectful as well as thoughtful comments offered by the folks who’ve posted above me. I like the idea of treating all belief systems with respect, and appreciate it when people take time to listen to each other and examine their own beliefs critically. That in my mind is the true definition of tolerance and can serve to strengthen and refine all of us.

Reply

Michelle Vandepas

Amy,
To be honest I really struggle with tolerance. I disagree with so many things out there… but as an interviewer I want to hear other people’s point of view – not give mine too often – but if you want enough of my interviews I’m sure my view will show through.

Maaannnn… You’ve got some stamina to stay on the line with this guy, Michelle! You gave him a lot of good questions, each one of which if he started answering by saying, “That’s a really great question,” I knew was going be a long several minutes. : )

So to me, his entire angle is the use of science to prove the existence of god. That being his proven approach, his position was only weakened each time he veered into citing rumours of miracles or making specious analogies between cosmic order and human culture. One part that really rubbed me the wrong way is when he insisted that the universe must have only one ruler, because countries only have one president. That alone would have been an (unscientific) analogy of convenience, but he also conveniently forgets that our president is only 1/3 of our government, and not a monarch like the god he describes.

I think he’d be much better off sticking to the straight and narrow of his prove-god-through-science charter, which you could have explored for hours if he didn’t seem to keep losing his focus, or his nerve. I’m going to keep tuning in, because I’m sure you have other guests who are worthy of your curiosity!… See More

Hi Michelle,

what a great interview. I like it very much because it fits so good with my beliefs. If one is interested in the question “how could HE let this happen if he loves us??” I really recommend reading William P. Young’s book “The shack”. I read it and it made me cry because it is oh so true!

One thing that always comes into my mind when asking the question “Am I alone, is there nobody to help me?” is this little story:

When I came to the end of my life I was meeting there with God and he took me for a walk along the beach. When I looked back through my life I recognized footprints in the sand according to the several stations of my life. I saw that every single time I was struggling and fighting and having hard times, there was only one footprint so I turned to HIM and asked him: “Dear God. It looks like every time it was easy throughout me life, you have been with me but why did you leave me alone, when I was struggling?” And he turned to me smiling and answered: “My beloved child. Every time you see only one footprint in the sand, you have not been alone! I was bearing you!”

This may not be for everyone but it helped me understand that he is out there all the time taking my hand when I need his support!

Thanks Michelle for sharing this with us!

@Debbie,

I experience God on many subjective levels. Not everything needs proof. But for some people in the world, hard factual stuff is the #1 way they judge the world. I think it’s important to approach this from the scientific and philosophical and logical side. Not everyone relates to that.

@David Rogers:

I beg to differ. Evolution? Yes, no problem. Science proving there is no God? Science can prove no such thing. However information theory and mathematics give 100% inference to the universe having a metaphysical origin.

@Keller:

Without man a term like “DNA” would not exist, but DNA would still play its role in replicating cells.

@Langdon:

Not every evidence I present is bulletproof. Some more than others. I think the most solid argument I have is “If you can read this, I can prove God exists” – http://www.cosmicfingerprints.com/ifyoucanreadthis.htm

Perry, I’ve listened to about 3/4 of your lecture to which you linked me, and I think the problem you’re having is in your concept of information. As you said, we don’t listen to radio waves from the sun and suddenly hear ‘My Sharona.’ But you use this as an argument to say that the information contained in solar emanations is so low as to be considered chaos. It is not chaos. It is simply information that is meaningless to us. ‘My Sharona’ seems more like information because it was conceived by a human mind FOR a human mind.

Random mutation adds chaos (reduces the inforamation) of a genetic system in the sense that the information that results might not make ‘sense’ to the system that decodes it. But occasionally it will, and might contribute to the success of the organism.

You use the random ad generator you programmed as evidence that random mutation can’t contibute to the information of a genetic system. What you fail to notice is that your random character editor is going up against the most powerful engine of evolution in the world- the human imagination. In the human imagination possibilities have the luxury of competing for viability without undergoing the formality of actually existing. Therefore only the most likely possibilities (ideas for advertisements) ever even enter the cultural arena. It’s not a bit surprising that an ad altered by the slow shuffle of truly random character changes can’t possibly compete! This is not proof that mutation can’t contribute to information; It’s an unfair and poorly-conceived contest.

Information exists everywhere, but we only consider information that makes sense to us legitimate. Your question should be, then, “why does some information make sense to us and some not?” The answer has to be, because we evolved to make sense of the information that is relevant to us.

I’ll finish your lecture, Perry, but it all seems to be built on this fundamental misunderstanding.

There are two magisteria, the natural world and the supernatural world. The realm of science is the natural world, the realm of what our senses tell us, the realm of what we can measure statistically. In this magisterium lives the scientific method, the hypothesis, research question and the theory which can be reproduced over and over again with the same results. The supernatural world is the world of mythology, religion and answers humans make up to fill in for what they don’t know yet scientifically. Yes, we have many gaps in our knowledge from the natural world, but to fill in those gaps in knowledge with myths, religious conjecture et al is not an answer neither. Scientists do not pretend to know something they cannot prove. Religionists make it up as they go. Damiano de Sano Iocovozzi MSN FNP CNS

Damiano,

You have just made a non-scientific philosophical statement. This statement falls under the category of a supernatural judgment, as it is not a scientifically verifiable truth.

Thus your statement violates its own intentions.

This is really just a secular brush-off of the most pressing life questions.

To the extent that science can prove anything, the existence of code in DNA proves a metaphysical designer. See http://www.cosmicfingerprints.com/proof

Reply

Damiano de Sano Iocovozzi MSN FNP CNS

Dear Mr. Marshall, Your statements are pure rubbish. Prove your statements with facts, not conjectures, wishful thinking or magical thinking. You make also a huge error in logic as you state as fact things you, as a human being, cannot possibly know. Scientists do not declare anything to be a fact unless it is proven over and over again. Scientists do not blurt out statements about scientific theory without peer review, statistics and solid research. I do not declare anything as I am not equipped to know how many angels can dance on the head of a pin, nor do I care to know. I only know about the natural world from my years as an observor. Still, our knowledge base changes constantly due to discovery and I am hesitant to declare anything. Equally ridiculous is mythology and religious dogma that is taken literally, like intelligent design. If fossils do not fit in to a 5,000 year old earth view, then it is suspect? Intelligent design is also pure rubbish. Damiano de Sano Iocovozzi
